Mobile service units of population welfare department have been working for the last two decades, but due to lacking administrative control and monitoring, desired results could not achieved. Punjab Population Welfare Minister Naseem Lodhi said this while addressing a two-day, "District Health and Population Management Workshop" here on Friday.

Secretary Population Welfare Khawaja Muhammad Naeem, the representatives of federal and provincial governments, health and population welfare also attended the meeting.

The minister further said that it was necessary to develop an effective monitoring system and sensitise the field staff, besides giving facilities to the doctors.

She said that the government would provide mobile service unit facility at the level of tehsil headquarters soon. She added that the population welfare was ignored in the past and doctors were not given proper facilities to carry out their professional duties.

According to her, only 26-percent of the population were enjoying healthcare facilities. The government has decided to increase the number of these units so that people could get quality health care facilities at their door steps.

She maintained that public representatives should be included in the campaign of population planning and the health department, district governments and NGOs should join hands to achieve the set goals.

She observed that the federal and provincial governments should work consistently so that the population growth rate could be further curtailed.
